Character Development: The Cuca

The Cuca is a beast that originates from Hispanic countries her appearance varied from country to country some believing she has the form of a dragon others believe she is a tortoise like creature but the form I chose was the Brazilian lore of a large crocodile woman who would eat children. I felt this would be the more recognizable form.

I started on drawing various different reptilian species these included the Caiman, Gharial and Saltwater Crocodile. Though these species all sound very similar they have key features that differentiate themselves from each other. After looking at the biological form I started to anthropomorphise the character and draw elements from each drawing. I used the hulking body of the saltwater crocodile to describe her form as I felt it was the most threatening of all of my sketches, I used the head shape of the Caiman due to its nice curves and form in comparison to the crocodile or alligators who have head shapes that are bulky and flat.  From the Gharial I used the eyes purely because I thought they were humorous.
